In the late 1990s and early 2000s, I experienced the death of several family members. This drove me to look at how my expanding diagrammatic language, visual vocabulary, and process might capture the breadth and depth of someone's life. As a result I developed an alternative approach to portraiture – researching aspects of a person's  life and then painting from the subsequent visual vocabulary of schematics and imagery. This work has evolved to include portraits of the living – friends, my favorite composers, and ultimately commissioned work.
